Today, the Republic of Azerbaijan celebrates the National Flag Day. Our tricolor flag, reflecting the values and ideas of the Azerbaijani people, is a beacon of development, security and independence of our state, a light that confidently guides our people to the future.
The National Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan was approved at the meeting of the Government of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on November 9, 1918 and had state status until April 1920. At the session held on November 17, 1990, on the initiative and under the leadership of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the national leader of our people Heydar Aliyev, this flag was approved as the National Flag of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, and on February 5, 1991, upon the recommendation of the Supreme Majlis, the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan declared it the national flag.
Under the leadership of the national leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev, systematic steps have been taken to promote the state flag as a sacred national symbol. According to the Order signed by President Ilham Aliyev in 2009, November 9 is annually celebrated as the Day of the National Flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
In accordance with the Order signed by the head of state in 2007, the National Flag Square opened in 2010 and the National Flag Museum created there occupy a special place in the promotion of our national symbols.
Our people's respect for the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan is at the highest level, not only as a symbol, but also as a sacred value reflecting the freedom, unity and will of our people. Undoubtedly, the highest expression of respect for the national flag was the fact that under this flag our people closely united around the victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief and restored the territorial integrity of our country. Let us recall that Mr. President in his historic speech at the opening of the State Flag Square in 2010 said: “After the restoration of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, our national state flag will be raised on the lands that are still under occupation today. Our flag will flutter in Karabakh, Khankendi, Shusha.” Our national flag now proudly flutters in all corners of our country, including Shusha, Khojaly and Khankendi.
The head of state visited the square, which began to function in a new look and layout after the reconstruction and restoration work carried out on the State Flag Square, respectfully examined the historical flags of Azerbaijan, including the flag of the Irevan Khanate, in the State Flag Museum.
The Western Azerbaijan Community, which unites Azerbaijanis who were forced to leave their native lands as a result of ethnic cleansing carried out by the Armenian government, expresses deep gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for his unequivocal support for our right to peaceful, safe and dignified return, as well as for respecting the historical symbols of the Azerbaijani people.
