In recent days, the government of Armenia and the leadership of parliament have been making statements containing a refusal to lift territorial claims against Azerbaijan at the constitutional level and aimed at disrupting the peace process.
The Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, rejected the steps that his country should take both as required by international law and following the logic of the peace process, and tried to accuse Azerbaijan with unacceptable expressions such as “ethnic cleansing”, “genocide”.
Alen Simonyan, instead of making destructive statements, should acknowledge his country's responsibility for the crimes against humanity committed against Azerbaijanis in Garakils, Basarkechar, Gafan and other places during the forced expulsion and deportation of Azerbaijanis from Armenia, and work to restore the rights expelled Azerbaijanis, including ensuring their dignified and safe return.
The Western Azerbaijan Community condemns the decision of the Armenian government to choose a confrontational path and drag the prospects for peace in the region along an uncertain path and calls on the international community to put pressure on this country so that Armenia takes a constructive position.
