Statement on the expulsion of the last Azerbaijanis from Armenia
08 August 2024, 10:35

Today marks 33 years since the expulsion of the last Azerbaijanis from Armenia. After the Armenian authorities forcibly evicted the residents of the village of Nuvedi in the Zangezur region from their homeland on August 8, 1991, there was not a single Azerbaijani left in Armenia. Thus, the last deportation, which began in 1987 and ended with the expulsion of 300 thousand Azerbaijanis from Armenia, has ended and remains a black page in the history of mankind.

The Western Azerbaijan Community once again declares that it will never put up with this injustice committed against Western Azerbaijanis. The community demands the creation of conditions for the safe and dignified return of Azerbaijanis expelled from the territory of present-day Armenia, based on the right to return established by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other important acts.

The Western Azerbaijan Community calls on the international community to support the provision of safe return of Azerbaijanis expelled from the territory of Armenia, the adoption of legally binding international acts with appropriate verification mechanisms and guarantees. The Community also condemns attempts to discriminate on ethnic and religious grounds in the area of the right of return and stresses the need to respect the principle of reciprocity and equal rights in this matter.
