The views expressed by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in his speech on the occasion of Army Day once again demonstrate that Armenia is not interested in signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan. How can a country that wants peace boast of signing billions of dollars in arms deals? Nikol Pashinyan’s repetition of the idea of a “mirror withdrawal”, sounding outdated, utopian proposals such as a “non-aggression pact”, “joint arms control mechanism” prove that Armenia is trying to avoid a peace agreement with unfounded justifications. The Prime Minister of Armenia should take real steps to ensure peace and begin a dialogue with the West Azerbaijani community, rather than putting forward a strange initiative like a “non-aggression pact” reminiscent of the period between the first and second world wars.
The statements of the President of Armenia and the Speaker of Parliament on the occasion of Army Day contained elements of an attempt to justify the first Karabakh war and the results of the second Karabakh war. Such contradictory statements are absolutely incompatible with Armenia's declared peace policy and must be stopped.
In addition, statements by a number of Western countries on the occasion of Army Day serve to encourage revanchism in Armenia, which has occupied the lands of a neighboring state for almost thirty years, and raise questions about how interested these countries themselves are in the peace process.
